What we thought

After lockdown restrictions were lifted, I was keener than ever to get outdoors, somewhere further afield than my local supermarket. A hike to Shutlingsloe in the Peak District provided the perfect first test for the CimAlp Katmandou 2 trousers. Read on to find out how I got on with them.

Being on the slender side I usually have difficulty finding a walking trouser that fits comfortably and stays up, but I had no problems with these trousers and even with plenty in my pockets weighing them down, they stayed in place.

I found them a comfortable, light and an airy loose fit, without being baggy with the added benefit of UV protection, much needed on a very sunny hike in the countryside.

Pockets & features

The styling is similar to combat pants, so the CimAlp Katmandou pants come with pockets aplenty.

A discreetly hidden internal pocket is ideal for keeping valuable items safe whilst out and about, the large front pockets allow you to store other items you may need to keep at hand and one of the pockets includes a glasses wipe which came in handy for my sunglasses.

There’s also a zippable compartment that’s perfect for keeping your precious mobile phone safe whilst clambering over a stile in style, so no fear of smashed screens here!

The side pockets are generous and mesh ventilated and I found they were just right for keeping my map book in. There’s even a tiny little built-in compass should you choose to do some impromptu orienteering.

The main feature of these trousers is that you can quickly transform them into shorts, the bottom section of each leg completely unzips. Incorporating a clever two zip system, there was no need to take my boots off to change and I removed them without even having to sit down. My lockdown white pins soon had the benefit of being out in the sunshine.

I did find the zip a little fiddly, but this may have been due to me not being familiar with how they worked and being over-ambitious in looking for a quick costume change similar to Bucks Fizz’s Eurovision performance.

It was a very warm day and decent length walk, but I never once felt sweaty, overly hot or weighted down, so in terms of comfort and performance, I felt like they delivered and I really liked the styling of these trousers too, I felt I kept cool whilst still looking cool.

Final verdict

The CimAlp Katmandou 2 convertible trousers are extremely practical. Although I found them a little fiddly to convert, the zips that allow you to turn them from trousers into shorts make them a versatile trouser choice, and ideal for warm weather walks.

Quality, as always with CimAlp is excellent, so if you’re looking for a pair of lightweight, capable walking trousers, these make a great choice.

What we thought

I love hoodies and fleeces and I have a collection of them in various different styles and colours. When I’m camping, I practically live in zip-up fleece hoodies and when I’m in the mountains snowboarding, back at the chalet or for wandering around the village, I also pop on a fleece or hoody.

CimAlp Veymont F Women's Thermpolar® Hooded Jacket Review

I’ve been rocking my old faithful 15 year old, bright pink Westbeach zip-up hoody most recently, and whilst I invariably choose clothing in bright pink or purple, it’s nice to welcome something into my wardrobe in another colour I love! It’s also available in black and grey though for those that would prefer something more subtle.

The sizing comes up a little small, so the website advises you to size up with this one, so I did exactly that and whilst it was still a snug fit, there’s a great amount of stretch to the garment which makes it comy and easy to wear.

There are two good sized zipped pockets on the outside, big enough to fit my enormous phone inside with room to spare, and I really like the leather-look dark brown zip pulls, logo and badge detailing too.

Perhaps my favourite thing after the colour and fit though has to be the fact that, joy of joy, it has thumb loops! I can’t explain why tops and jackets with thumb loops make me so happy but they do!

This is a great quality fleece with some lovely features. It’s super warm and snuggly, but still manages to be lightweight and I love that it’s made from stretchy material too so it doesn’t feel restrictive when out walking.

CimAlp Veymont F Women's Thermpolar® Hooded Jacket Review

The ideal layer for cooler evenings when camping, great for slinging on at home and also perfect for days out and layering up under a waterproof in the winter.

I love the fit of the fleece, the modern styling and of course, the bright vibrant colour, so it’s a big thumbs up from me for this great value CimAlp polar fleece jacket, which is now on sale for £54 making it a great buy.

GEAR | Spotlight on CimAlp Hiking Clothing – Fast UK Delivery Straight From The Alps

You might have spotted some of our past product reviews of CimAlp hiking gear which we rate very highly, but if you’ve never heard of the brand before, we thought we’d give you a bit of background information now that their UK website is fully up and running. Read on to find out more.

CimAlp outdoor gear

CimAlp is a French brand, created in 1964 by a passionate mountaineer and visionary, deeply committed to manufacturing technical products, accessible to the largest possible number of mountain enthusiasts.

50 years later, still established at the foot of the Alps between Vercors and Monts d’Ardèche, CimAlp now develops clothing and equipment for all-mountain activities: skiing, hiking, trekking, and above all Trail Running,
its No. 1 market.

Having switched to an online business model for almost 10 years, CimAlp’s ability to propose highly technical products at outstanding prices is now widely known. Some of those products being now essentials for the most demanding athletes, like the STORM 2 jacket, or the 864s, the first Trail Running shoes with progressive drop.

Outstanding technical performance

Always aiming at offering improved comfort and thermal protection, CimAlp is also engaged in the development of fabrics and high-tech fibres.

A winning bet, as shown by the success of the patented Cyclone®
technology that allows up to 10 times faster moisture transfer (French Outdoor Award in the TRAIL category in Friedrichshafen) or the ULTRASHELL® membrane, 8 times more breathable than a regular hard-shell membrane and at the same time 20’000 Schmerber water-resistant.

Environmental commitment

In addition to this economic and technical dynamism, CIMALP also claims a strong environmental commitment, as an expression of its owners’, teams’ & customers’ philosophy.

By limiting the impact of its manufacturing processes (materials selection, toxic waste suppression) but also of its products, making every effort to engineer sustainable clothing able to mix pleasure and conscious consumption. Doing more and better with less.
